Stretched out in the chair, its thick padding a far cry from the stone floor of his cave, Ghost absently traced a claw along the arm as he watched Lexi sleep. He memorized the way her thick lashes brushed her cheeks, the smooth rise and fall of her chest, and the way those long red curls splayed across the white head cushion.

Had she sensed how reluctant he’d been to leave? Had she seen it in his eyes or in the way he’d hesitated before starting for the door?

She must’ve. It was too much to hope she’d wanted him close as badly as he wanted to remain so. Far more likely that her compassionate nature prompted her to invite him to stay.

She was an enigma, this female.

When she’d insisted he visit the med-bay, he thought for sure she would replace his collars, both internal and external, with her own. Yet, he woke to find she’d only healed him. The faint but incessant compulsion to drive the indigenous out of the forest was still there in the back of his mind.

A gut-churning mix of dejection, dismay, and confusion hit the moment he realized that.

He’d quickly concealed the emotions before she saw them, reasoning she must simply require more convincing that he’d make a good slave. So, he’d done exactly that.

Instead of tempering the instincts to care for her, he allowed them free rein. Food, water, comfort—anything he could get for her, he did.

Thoughts of other ways he could prove himself to her, care for her, were still circling in his mind as he drifted off to sleep.

Whatever it took, he would find a way to be hers.
